The Wardrobe Wars

March 14, 2018

We have all been there. A teenage girl has decided to put on an outfit (if we can call it that) that is less than modest and someone has asked US to handle it.

Do we run away? No!

We were all teenagers at some point- attempting to keep up with the current fashion and trying to blend in at school! I remember a day in 6th grade that I wore a lime green pleather jacket with a zebra print shirt and matching purse. Somebody should have waged a war against my wardrobe that day.  For real!

While it can be a repetitive and long process –Let’s not run from the topic of modest dress with our girls- but walk through these situations with them by giving them practical points to consider as they choose out tomorrows new outfit!

Here is a way I have gone about this conversation with my own girls:

What do you think your clothes say about you?

Does the way we dress REALLY matter?

Yes!!

Why should we care about the way we dress?

1 Corinthians 10:31 (Whatsoever you do, do all to the glory of God)

We are to honor God in all that we do- even the clothes that we put on our bodies!

Questions to ask when buying/putting on clothes…

1. Does it cover my body? It shouldn’t be: too tight, too short, too transparent, body forming

2. Who am I trying to impress? Are you trying to get the attention of a boy with your clothes? Impress a friend? Our desire should be to honor the Lord—not get the affection or attention of anyone else

3. What does this outfit say about my relationship with Christ? All that we do is either communicating that our lives have been changed by the Gospel or that we are living our life for ourselves.

An important note… the way that we dress matters to!

Mommas - Are you wearing clothes that contradict the standards for modesty mentioned?

Girls Leaders - Are you wearing clothes that don’t meet the dress code at church that YOU set?

Let us join together and walk our girls through these days of the wardrobe war!
